Northern Catalan (Catalan:català septentrional),[a] also known asRoussillonese (rossellonès),[b] is aCatalandialect mostly spoken inNorthern Catalonia (roughly corresponding with the region ofRoussillon), but also extending in the northeast part ofSouthern Catalonia in a transition zone withCentral Catalan.[1][2] All speakers of Catalan from North Catalonia are at least natively bilingual with French.[3]
Some subdialects keep the singular masculine definite articlelo, as inNorth-Western Catalan and many varieties ofOccitan.
Northern Catalan has a large body of words imported fromFrench and Occitan.[5] It also features some grammatical forms and structures that are typical of Occitan, such as the use of a lone post-verbalpas, rather than a lone preverbalno to express basic negation (Northern Catalancanti pas vs.Central Catalanno canto, 'I don't sing' or 'I'm not singing');pas is also used in some other Catalan dialects for emphasis but always withno before the verb (Central Catalanno canto pas, 'I donot sing' or 'I amnot singing').
