North District (Chinese:北區) is the northernmost district of the18 districts of Hong Kong. It is located in the northeastern part of theNew Territories. Thenew town ofFanling–Sheung Shui is within this district. It had a population of 298,657 in 2001. The district has the second lowest population density in Hong Kong.
It borders withShenzhen city with theSham Chun River. Most major access points tomainland China from Hong Kong lie in this district. The North District is about 168 km2 (65 sq mi) in area.
According to statistics, 70% of the district population lives in thepublic estates in theFanling–Sheung Shui New Town. 40,000 villagers living around the two town centres and the main rural towns (Sha Tau Kok andTa Kwu Ling) account for most residents in the district.
Hong Kong Public Libraries has four libraries in the district: Fanling, Fanling South, Sha Tau Kok, and Sheung Shui.[1]
The northern end of theWilson Trail hiking path is located in the North District. The trail ends atNam Chung.
North District is served by theEast Rail line,Fanling Highway,San Tin Highway andSha Tau Kok Road.
