North Dargwa is aDargin language, sometimes referred to as a language family,[1] spoken by over 133,000 people[2] in south-centralDagestan. Thestandard written variety of the language is based on the Aqusha andUrakhi dialects of it, and is not mutually intelligible with other varieties.[3] For further information, seeDargwa language.

Classification

[edit]

The North Dargwa language is the largest member of the north-central group of the Dargin languages, both by number and by area. It is approximately as distant from the other North-Central languages as the others, except forMehweb, which is divergent.[2]

Geographical distribution

[edit]

North Dargwa is found in easternLevashinsky District, central and northeasternAkushinsky District, throughoutSergokalinsky District, southernKarabudakhkentsky District, southeasternBuynaksky District, and in certain areas ofKayakentsky District. Many speakers have moved to the southern parts ofEuropean Russia.[4]

Dialects

[edit]

The dialects of North Dargwa areAqusha,Urakhi, Upper Mulebki, Murego-Gubden, Mugi, andKadar.[5] Out of these, Urakhi is the largest of the dialects. They are so divergent that some linguists, such asYuri Koryakov [ru], consider them to be on the boundary between dialects and separate languages altogether.[1][2]
