Noel Monkman (1896–1969) was anAustralian filmmaker, born in New Zealand,[1] best known for specialising inunderwater photography.[2] He was a press photographer in New Zealand before moving to Australia and jointing the Orpheum Theatre orchestra.[3]
He established Australian Educational Films withF.W. Thring, directing a series of educational nature films about theGreat Barrier Reef.[4][5] He later made several documentaries as well as two dramatic feature films.[6] He collaborated throughout his career with his wife Kitty.[7]
Filmink argued "Had the [1935 film] quota been enforced, Noel Monkman would have become a significant feature director of adventure movies – he and his wife still had a fine career, but it’s not what it could and should have been."[8]
He and Kitty lived for a time onGreen Island, acting as a volunteer air observer duringWorld War II.[9]
