Phylum of bacteria
TheNitrospirota are aphylum ofbacteria . They include multiple genera such asNitrospira , the largest.
History of knowledge [ edit ] The first member of this phylum,Nitrospira marina , was discovered in 1985.[ 2] The second member,Nitrospira moscoviensis , was discovered in 1995.[ 3] [ 4] Nitrospira inopinata was discovered in 2015[ 5] [ 6] and cultivated in 2017.[ 7]
Nitrospirota containsnitrifying taxa which oxidize nitrite to nitrate (nitrite-oxidizing bacteria,NOB [ 8] ) andcommamox bacteria:Nitrospira inopinata .[ 5] [ 6] Dissulfurispira thermophila (Thermodesulfovibrionia ) grows bydisproportionation of thiosulfate or elemental sulfur.[ 9]
The currently accepted taxonomy is based on theList of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LSPN)[ 16] and theNational Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).[ 4]
