Order of bacteria
TheNitrosomonadales [ 1] are an order of the classBetaproteobacteria in the phylumPseudomonadota .[ 3] Like all members of their class, they areGram-negative .
The order is divided into six families:
Nitrosomonadaceae (type family) comprises the generaNitrosomonas (type genus),Nitrosolobus andNitrosospira .[ 1] Methylophilaceae comprises the generaMethylophilus (type genus),Methylobacillus andMethylovorus .[ 1] Spirillaceae comprises the genusSpirillum (type genus)[ 2] [ 1] Thiobacillaceae comprises the generaThiobacillus (type genus),Annwoodia ,Sulfuritortus .[ 1] Gallionellaceae comprises the generaGallionella (type genus),Ferriphaselus ,Sulfuriferula ,Sulfurirhabdus andSulfuricella .[ 1] [ 4] Sterolibacteraceae comprises the generaSterolibacterium ,Sulfurisoma ,Denitratisoma ,Sulfuritalea ,Georgfuchsia ,Sulfurisoma andMethyloversatilis .[ 1] Members of thegenus Nitrosomonas oxidizeammonium ions intonitrite ,[ 3] a process callednitrification , and are important in thenitrogen cycle . Otherautotrophic genera such asThiobacillus andAnnwoodia oxidize reduced inorganicsulfur ions such asthiosulfate andsulfide intosulfate and have key roles in thesulfur cycle .Methylotrophs such asMethylophilus oxidize compounds such asmethanol intocarbon dioxide and are key to thecarbon cycle .Gallionella andFerriphaselus oxidiseferrous iron (Fe2+ ) ions intoferric hydroxide (Fe(OH)3 ) duringautotrophic growth, and thus have roles in thecarbon cycle and theiron cycle . As such, theNitrosomonadales are critical tobiogeochemical cycling of the elements and many species have key roles in principal biochemical processes.[ 1]
