The order is divided into six families:
Nitrosomonadaceae Nitrosomonas Nitrosolobus Nitrosospira [ 1] Methylophilaceae Methylophilus Methylobacillus Methylovorus [ 1] Spirillaceae Spirillum [ 2] [ 1] Thiobacillaceae Thiobacillus Annwoodia Sulfuritortus [ 1] Gallionellaceae Gallionella Ferriphaselus Sulfuriferula Sulfurirhabdus Sulfuricella [ 1] [ 4] Sterolibacteraceae Sterolibacterium Sulfurisoma Denitratisoma Sulfuritalea Georgfuchsia Sulfurisoma Methyloversatilis [ 1] Members of thegenus Nitrosomonas ammonium ions intonitrite ,[ 3] nitrification , and are important in thenitrogen cycle . Otherautotrophic genera such asThiobacillus Annwoodia sulfur ions such asthiosulfate andsulfide intosulfate and have key roles in thesulfur cycle .Methylotrophs such asMethylophilus methanol intocarbon dioxide and are key to thecarbon cycle .Gallionella Ferriphaselus ferrous iron (Fe2+ ) ions intoferric hydroxide (Fe(OH)3 ) duringautotrophic growth, and thus have roles in thecarbon cycle and theiron cycle . As such, theNitrosomonadales are critical tobiogeochemical cycling of the elements and many species have key roles in principal biochemical processes.[ 1]
