Nir Etzion (Hebrew:נִיר עֶצִיוֹן,lit. 'Etzion Meadow') is a religiousmoshav shitufi in northernIsrael. Located betweenEin Hod andEin Hawd nearAtlit, at the foot ofMount Carmel, it falls under the jurisdiction ofHof HaCarmel Regional Council. In 2022 it had a population of 1,010.[1]
The village was established in 1950 as akibbutz by refugees fromKfar Etzion andBe'erot Yitzhak (which had been captured by theJordanian andEgyptian armies during the1948 Arab-Israeli War) as well asHolocaust survivors and members of theAhdut andTikvakvutzot on land that had belonged to the newly depopulatedPalestinian villageAyn Hawd.[2] It was affiliated withHapoel HaMizrachi.[3]
In 1953 it converted to amoshav shitufi.[3]
The localsynagogue is named in honor ofIsaac Wolfson, who contributed significantly to the construction of public buildings in the moshav. Designed by local resident Hanoch Achiman, theTorah ark'sparochet is embroidered with three symbols, each representing a chapter in the moshav's history: theHolocaust, the destruction ofKfar Etzion, and the settlement on Mount Carmel. Unlike otherreligious kibbutzim, the community in Nir Etzion prays according toNusach Sefard, continuing the practices that were once followed in Kfar Etzion.[4]
