Nick Cheuk Yick-him (Chinese:卓亦謙; born 21 October 1987) is a Hong Kong director and screenwriter best known for his directorial debutTime Still Turns the Pages (2023), which earned himBest New Director in the60th Golden Horse Awards andBest New Director in the42nd Hong Kong Film Awards.
Cheuk was born on 21 October 1987, in Hong Kong.[1][2] He is the son ofWarner Cheuk, the incumbentDeputy Chief Secretary for Administration of Hong Kong.[3] He had his secondary education atRaimondi College, the alma mater of his father, but did not perform well academically.[3] However, he became immersed in video editing after creatingNBA highlight reels withWindows Movie Maker and received positive feedback on online forums.[4] He also sparked interest in films after watching the 1997 filmGood Will Hunting.[4] He had poor relationships with his parents, as his father wanted him to become a lawyer or doctor instead of studying humanities subjects.[3] Only getting 8 marks in theHong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, his father sent him to a boarding school in Britain after Form 5.[3] He later returned to Hong Kong and attended theCity University of Hong Kong to study creative media.[5] He was mentored by director and guest lecturerPatrick Tam,[5] and won silver prize in the18th Ifva Awards with his graduation project,Waiting to Drown….[6]
After graduating with aBachelor of Arts in 2012,[4] Cheuk worked as awriter's assistant for sports drama filmUnbeatable and action thriller filmThat Demon Within.[7] In 2017, Cheuk wrote the horror filmZombiology: Enjoy Yourself Tonight [zh], which was his first credited screenplay.[6] He also co-wrote action thriller filmParadox with Jill Leung in the same year.[8]
In 2019, Cheuk applied for and received funding from the Hong Kong Film Development Council's "First Feature Film Initiative" with a screenplay draft ofTime Still Turns the Pages.[9] He penned the script in 2015 based on the death of a close friend and university classmate,[1] but altered certain aspects of his friend's experiences to delve into the concerning phenomenon ofstudent suicides in Hong Kong.[10] Cheuk also served as the director and co-editor of the film.[1] The film has gained critical acclaim for its subject matter, atmosphere and writing.[1] Cheuk wonBest New Director in the60th Golden Horse Awards andBest New Director in the42nd Hong Kong Film Awards,[11][12] as well as nominations forBest Director,Best Screenplay,Best Editing in the latter.[13]
