New Poland (Polish:Nowa Polska,NOWA) is acentristpolitical party in Poland. The party was founded in September 2025 based on a Senate circle ofSenate Pact 2023 independents on the initiative ofsenatorWadim Tyszkiewicz, after which it selected senatorZygmunt Frankiewicz as its party chairman.

Senate Circle Independents and Self-Governing

[edit]

TheSenate Circle Independents and Self-Governing (Polish:Koło Senackie Niezależni i Samorządni) was created bysenators elected in the2023 Polish parliamentary election as part of theSenate Pact 2023 who ran not as members of political parties but through independent electoral committees within the Pact. The circle had four members —Andrzej Dziuba,Zygmunt Frankiewicz,Krzysztof Kwiatkowski (leader at the time) andWadim Tyszkiewicz — until 22 February 2024, when Kwiatkowski joined theCivic Coalition Parliamentary Club.[8] On 6 March 2024, Frankiewicz became the leader of the circle.[9]

History

[edit]

Preliminary organization

[edit]
Wadim Tyszkiewicz, Zygmunt Frankiewicz and Andrzej Dziuba, senators founding the party

Following the defeat of liberalRafał Trzaskowski in the2025 Polish presidential election, Wadim Tyszkiewicz announced his retirement from Polish politics in early June 2025.[10] He claims to have "fallen into depression right after the presidential election", believing that the supposed "golden age of Poland" that in his belief started in 1989 had ended, given the success ofKarol Nawrocki,Law and Justice,Confederation andGrzegorz Braun.[6]

However, his stance quickly changed in response to the rising support for theright-wing in Poland, and in an interview withRzeczpospolita on 26 June 2025, Tyszkiewicz announced that he would be constructing a new political group in opposition to the "POPiS duopoly" and "brown Poland", seeking to "prevent theHungarian scenario in Poland" and "rule of thepopulistfar-right".[11] He stated: "I am driven by the awareness of the threat that awaits Poland if, in two years' time, these parties gain power, and God forbid, a constitutional majority. Then we will be on a slippery slope. This motivated me to take intensive action".[6]

He was joined by the other senators in his circle, Dziuba and Frankiewicz,[12] "experienced"self-government activists,[12][13] among which activists of theYes! For Poland[11] andOK Poland associations.[14] In July, Tyszkiewicz announced the creation of a new Senate club called "Nonpartisan Self-Government",[15] however, this was never completed and members of New Poland remain part of the Independents and Self-Governing circle.

Establishment

[edit]

New Poland applied for registration on 10 September 2025 and tried to hold its first press conference on the same day. However, due to theRussian drone incursion into Poland, the press conference got delayed,[16] and was held on 16 September.[17] The party was registered on 30 October 2025.[1] SenatorZygmunt Frankiewicz became the party's firstchairman.[18]

It declares it will start independently in thenext parliamentary election, aiming for a result of "double-digit" result, putting local government members blocked from re-election in their current positions by newly-introducedterm limits on their electoral lists for theSejm.[19] The party held its first convention inPoznań on 26 October 2025, and plans to hold a bigger convention once the party is registered.[20]

Leadership

[edit]

In July, Tyszkiewicz announced that the party would begin without a clear leader.[21] The party opposes the "leader-driven party" (Polish:partia wodzowska) model,[22] seeking to avoid the mistakes of previous liberal parties such asRuch Palikota,Poland 2050 andModern.[12][16] The party seeks to coalesce self-government members and entrepreneurs.[22]

When founded,Zygmunt Frankiewicz was selected as theparty chairman, with vice-chairmen Wadim Tyszkiewicz andArkadiusz Wiśniewski and general secretaryGabriela Staszkiewicz.[18]

Ideology

[edit]

The party presents itself as an alternative to the two biggest parties,Civic Platform (PO) andLaw and Justice (PiS),[13] rejecting a coalition with right-wing PiS and theConfederation of the Polish Crown[15] or left-wingRazem,[16] and other "extremists",[23] presenting them asfascist orcommunist.[6] NOWA states that it represents disillusioned voters,[24] and claims it wants to "unite, not divide" Poles.[25] The party rejectspopulism and opposes the "brownization of Poland"[26] — according to Tyszkiewicz, the party is an alternative for young voters to the far-rightConfederation, among which the Confederation dominates,[27][26] noting that NOWA and Confederation share economically liberal views.[6]

New Poland is of aconservative-liberal andcentrist ideological profile.[24] Itsparty platform is focused oneconomic liberalism,self-governance,healthcare reform andeducation reform,[28] distancing itself fromworldview matters (such asabortion rights).[29] Its main proposals include tax reform—"simple, transparent, low, and inevitable taxes"—and administrative reform by eliminating the centrally-appointed office ofvoivode and empowering the locally-appointedVoivodeship marshal,[30] as well as the abolishment ofterm limits for local government members.[31] It denounces "quasi-communist slogans of the left" or populists that supportwealth redistribution from the rich to the poor.[23][7] New Poland is against theparty subsidy system.[32]

The party was compared toRuch Palikota,Poland 2050 orModern in being aliberalanti-establishment party,[16][33] andMarek Materek [pl]'sNew Democracy – Yes orBezpartyjni Samorządowcy as a party made by local government activists.[34] Ideologically, it was compared to theCivic Platform.[11]
