New Music Manchester refers to a group of English composers and performers who studied at theRoyal Manchester College of Music (now the RNCM) andManchester University in the 1950s. TheManchester School is principally identified with the composersHarrison Birtwistle,Peter Maxwell Davies andAlexander Goehr,[1] and together with the pianistJohn Ogdon and the conductor and trumpeterElgar Howarth they formed the group New Music Manchester. Others associated with the group includeDavid Ellis andRodney Friend. Its members played a significant role in reshaping the landscape ofBritish music in the later 20th century.[2]
