New Murabba (Arabic:المربع الجديد,romanized: al-Murabbaʿ al-Jadīd,lit. 'The NewMurabba') is amixed-use real estate development under construction in northwesternRiyadh and easternmostDiriyah,Saudi Arabia. It was announced in February 2023 by Saudicrown princeMohammed bin Salman as the world's largest modern downtown project. Named after Riyadh'sal-Murabba neighborhood, it is part ofSaudi Vision 2030 and would contain theMukaab, a 400-meters tall cuboid skyscraper.[1][2][3] It will be the world's second climate-controlled indoor city, after theMohammed Bin Rashid City inDubai,United Arab Emirates.[4][5]
The downtown will be situated at an intersection of King Khalid Road and King Salman Road. The downtown will sit on two neighborhoods ofRiyadh and three neighborhoods ofDiriyah. Its eastern part will be carved out from al-Malqa and partially al-Qirawan districts of Riyadh'sal-Shemal sub-municipality whereas its western portion will consist of al-Salmaniyah, al-Malik and partially al-Malqah neighborhoods of theDiriyah Governorate.[6]
The New Murabba project was announced on 16 February 2023 byCrown Prince andPrime Minister of Saudi Arabia,Mohammed bin Salman. The downtown, situated at an intersection between King Khalid Road and King Salman Road, will be completed by 2030.Mohammed bin Salman simultaneously unveiled theMukaab and announced the establishment of the New Murabba Development Company (NDMC), a firm owned by thePublic Investment Fund.[7]
It is named after theRiyadh'sal-Murabba neighborhood whereas its flagship architectural project, theMukaab, is modeled after the cuboidal layout of theMurabba Palace.[1][2][3]
According to theSaudi Press Agency, the downtown will be built around the concept of sustainability, featuring green areas and walking and cycling paths that will enhance the quality of life by promoting healthy, active lifestyles and community activities like eco-friendly zones and walking and cycling paths.[8] The project will also include an iconic museum, a technology and design university, a multipurpose immersive theater, and more than 80 entertainment and cultural venues.[9]
The project is projected to boost Saudi Arabia's economy in the non-oil sector and is expected to add 180 billionSaudi riyals ($48.00 billion) to non-oil GDP and create 334,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2030, a year that coincides with the estimated culmination ofSaudi Vision 2030.[10][11][12]
