New Lynn was first formed for the1963 election.[3] It has always been held by members of theLabour Party. The electorate's first representative wasRex Mason, who had been an MP since1926 and who retired at the end of the term.[4] Mason was succeeded byJonathan Hunt, who held the electorate for the next 30 years until he contested theTamaki electorate in the1996 election instead.[5]Phil Goff became the representative in New Lynn in 1996.[6]
The electorate was abolished in 1999 and Goff successfully stood inMount Roskill. Titirangi replaced New Lynn in 1999 when population changes in Auckland lead to the creation of Mount Roskill, and Titirangi was won byDavid Cunliffe.[7] Three years later, population growth in north Auckland led to the creation of theHelensville electorate. The flow-on effect of this was to pull Titirangi eastwards, resulting in the reclamation of its former name for the2002 election. Cunliffe represented the New Lynn electorate until 2017.[7]
In November 2016, Labour leaderAndrew Little announced that Cunliffe would not seek re-election at the2017 general election,[8] and the seat was won in the election byDeborah Russell, retaining it for the Labour Party.
The electorate was disestablished for the 2026 general election due to population shifts inWest Auckland, with the population centers divided betweenWaitakere,Glendene andMt Roskill.[9]
Members of Parliament elected from party lists in elections where that person also unsuccessfully contested New Lynn. Unless otherwise stated, all MPs terms began and ended at general elections.
