Nesotragus/nəˈsɒtrəɡəs/ is agenus of dwarfantelope comprising two species, endemic to Africa, and formerly but incorrectly considered a synonym of the similarly named genusNeotragus. Recentnucleic acid studies demonstrate that the two species ofNesotragus are not closely related to the genusNeotragus. Members of the Nesotragus are the only members of the subfamilyNesotraginae or tribeNesotragini and are more closely related to theimpala, while theroyal antelope remains a member of the subfamilyAntilopinae or tribe Antilopini.[1] Thegenus name comes fromAncient Greekνῆσος (nêsos), meaning "island", andτράγος (trágos), meaning "he-goat", and thus, "island goat", apparently referring to the antelope species' habitat in wet rainforests.[2]
