Nelson Luis Marcenaro Nieves[1] (4 September 1952 – 13 May 2021) was an Uruguayanfootballer who played as acentre back.
Born inMontevideo, Marcenaro played club football forProgreso,Portuguesa,Peñarol, andEmelec.[2] With Peñarol he won thenational title on four occasions, and also won theCopa Libertadores andIntercontinental Cup.[3]
He also earned 8 caps for theUruguay national team between 1979 and 1981,[2] they won the1980 Mundialito.[3]
His brotherRoland was also a footballer and later a coach.[3]
From 2014 he worked to support former footballers with food and housing.[3]
He suffered a stroke in March 2020.[3] He died on 13 May 2021, aged 68, from a heart attack.[3]
