InIrish mythologyNeit (Néit,Nét,Neith) was a god of war. He was the husband ofNemain and/or Fea, and sometimes ofBadb.[1] Also grandfather ofBalor, he was killed at the legendary SecondBattle of Moytura.

Etymology

[edit]

The name probably derives from the proto-Celtic *nei-t-[2] meaning fighting or passion. A similarly named deity appears on two Celtiberian inscriptions,[3] as a RomanizedMars Neto and asNeito.

Legacy

[edit]

Neit is described as the uncle of theDagda, who gave himAilech Neit (Neit's Stonehouse), which is elsewhere described as the grave of Ahd, son of the Dagda.[4]Ailech Imchell, described as the "bright home of horses" and an envied stronghold, is another place where Aed is said to be buried and which is said to be in the "precinct where dweltNemain and Neit."[5] Neit is described as "dangerous" and "son of Indui, king of the north country, lord of horse breeding peoples."[6] Neit's sons includeDelbáeth, the father ofElatha, and Esarg, the father ofDian Cecht.[7]
