Neferkare VIII was the secondpharaoh of the10th Dynasty ofancient Egypt (between 2130 and 2040 BCE, during theFirst Intermediate Period).[1]
Thepraenomen "Neferkare" suggests he considered himself a legitimate successor ofPepi II Neferkare of the6th Dynasty, much like the many namesakeMemphite kings of theEighth Dynasty. He likely was the eighth king to bear this name – hence the "VIII" – although many of his predecessors are sometimes called by a combination of theirpraenomen andnomen (for example,Neferkare Tereru, orNeferkare Khendu).[2]
He is definitely attested only on theTurin King List, since he is not known by any archaeological find. It is highly unlikely that Neferkare VIII and the enigmatic kingKa-nefer-re mentioned in the tomb of thenomarchAnkhtifi are the same person, and it is somewhat more likely that Kaneferre should rather be identified withNeferkare VII of the previous9th Dynasty.[2]
