National Trails arelong distance footpaths and bridleways in England and Wales. They are administered byNatural England, an agency of theUK government, andNatural Resources Wales, aWelsh government-sponsored body. National Trails are marked with anacorn symbol along the route and are marked onOrdnance Survey maps. In Scotland, the equivalent trails are calledScotland's Great Trails and are administered byNatureScot.
The majority oflong-distance footpaths in the United Kingdom are not designated as National Trails, but are instead described and way-marked by other public bodies, by local authorities, or by private association or individuals. Some of these are also marked on Ordnance Survey maps.
Together these are over 4,000 kilometres (2,500 mi) long.
