TheNational Security Service (Turkish:Milli Emniyet Hizmeti, MEH, but known asMAH¶) was the governmental intelligence organization ofTurkey between 1926 and 1965, when it was replaced by theNational Intelligence Organization (Turkish:Millî İstihbarat Teşkilâtı, MİT).[1]

It was established at a time whenMustafa Kemal Atatürk was purgingCommittee of Union and Progress elements, including theKarakol society andTeşkilât-ı Mahsûsa ("Special Organization") intelligence organizations.[1][2] The first director of the MAH wasŞükrü Âli Ögel (1886–1973).
DuringWorld War II, Turkey saw increasedespionage byBritish,Soviet, andGerman operatives and sympathizers. The MAH learned thatNazi Germany would not attempt to invade Turkey, allowing theİnönü administration to resist mountingAllied pressure to declare war on Germany.
The MAH would go on to receive significant financial support from theCIA during theCold war.[3][4]
