Nathaniel Wales Faxon (born October 11, 1975)[1][2] is an American actor and comedian. A frequent presence on comedic films and TV series, he won theAcademy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for co-writingThe Descendants (2011). He starred in theFox comedy seriesBen and Kate (2012–2013) and theFX comedy seriesMarried (2014–2015), and voices Elfo in theNetflix adult animated television seriesDisenchantment (2018–2023). He also co-wrote and co-directedThe Way, Way Back (2013) andDownhill (2020) with writing partnerJim Rash.

Early life

Faxon was born Nathaniel Wales Faxon on October 11, 1975, inBoston,Massachusetts to Monica (née Kersten) and David Faxon.[3][4]

Faxon's early years were spent in the seaside community ofManchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, where he attended theBrookwood School. He later graduated from theHolderness School nearPlymouth, New Hampshire, and thenHamilton College in 1997.

Faxon is an alumnus of theLos Angeles-based improvisational and sketch comedy troupeThe Groundlings, where he began performing in 2001.[5]

He may be best known for his appearances in comedic films such asOrange County (2002),Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007),Bad Teacher (2011), and severalBroken Lizard films includingBeerfest (2006). He co-starred inDarren Star's semi-autobiographical satireGrosse Pointe and had recurring roles in several television series, includingThe Cleveland Show,Joey,Up All Night andReno 911!. He has also appeared on theRoseanne spin-offThe Conners since 2020 as Neville Goldufski.[citation needed]

Faxon has been featured in a series of prominentHoliday Inn commercials featuringJoe Buck, as well as an ad byBlockbuster. In 2012, he was cast as Ben Fox on theFox sitcomBen and Kate.[6] He starred withJudy Greer in theFX comedy seriesMarried, which ran for two seasons.

Writing and directing

Faxon and writing partnerJim Rash, whom he met while performing with The Groundlings, co-wrote the screenplay for the filmThe Descendants, starringGeorge Clooney and directed byAlexander Payne. On February 26, 2012, the screenplay forThe Descendants won anOscar, with Faxon, Rash, and Payne sharing the award.[7] The duo made their directorial debut withThe Way, Way Back (2013), based on their original screenplay, and starringSteve Carell,Toni Collette andSam Rockwell.[8] It premiered at theSundance Film Festival, whereFox Searchlight Pictures acquired it for $10 million;[9] it was released domestically to positive reviews that July.
