Narsingh Dev Jamwal (born 1931) is an Indian writer and playwright fromJammu,[1] who has authored 48 books,[2] includingSanjhi Dharti Bakhle Mahnu (novel), which won theSahitya Akademi Award in 1978.[3] He received India's fourth highestcivilian award,Padma Shri (2019) for his contribution in the field of literature and education.[4]
He was born in 1931 inJammu. Jamwal completed his matriculation in 1945. On 23 October 1947, he was part of Subedar Duni Chand's platoon at "Battle of Garhi" led byRajinder Singh (brigadier) and was jailed in Pakistan as aPOW only to be released a year later.[5] He joined theJammu & Kashmir Police in 1953.[2] He also holds amaster's degree inDogri fromJammu University.[3]
In 1978, Narsingh Dev was honoured with aSahitya Akademi Award for his novel in Dogri language,Sanjhi Dharti Bakhle Mahnu.[6] In 2008, he was awarded theSangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Indian theatre as a playwright.[3][7]
