Narceine is an opiumalkaloid produced by thePapaver somniferum (opium poppy) plant.[1] It is a bitter, crystalline compound withnarcotic effects.[citation needed] It was formerly used as a substitute formorphine.[medical citation needed] Its name is derived from theGreekνάρκη (nárkē), meaning numbness, and the postfix-ine referring to an alkaloid.
