Namrata Singh Gujral is an American filmmaker, motivational speaker and actor.
Gujral was born inDharamshala,Himachal Pradesh, to aPunjabiSikh andHindu family. She left India at a young age.[1]
Gujral started her career as an actress in the 2001 filmTraining Day.
She later became President of Uniglobe Entertainment, a Hollywood based studio, which focuses on socially relevant international projects for the North American market. Gujral’s first production,Americanizing Shelley (2007) starringBeau Bridges andWil Wheaton, was released theatrically in 24 countries withWarner Bros.
Her directorial debut came about after surviving breast cancer; she produced, directed and appeared in Uniglobe Entertainment's 2010 cancerdocudrama1 a Minute.[2] The film includes breast cancer survivorsOlivia Newton-John,Diahann Carroll,Melissa Etheridge,Mumtaz,Jaclyn Smith and cancer survivorsLisa Ray,Barbara Mori and cancer treatment advocatesDeepak Chopra,William Baldwin,Daniel Baldwin,Priya Dutt andNancy Brinker.
Gujral's 2018 venture5 Weddings, a Hollywood-Bollywood rom-com, features international starsRajkummar Rao,Nargis Fakhri,Golden Globe nomineeBo Derek andAcademy Awards nomineeCandy Clark[3][4] and opened theatrically in 54 countries. The film delves into the lives ofHijras, a group of transgender/eunuch dancers at Indian weddings, who are socially ostracized.[5]
Her 2024 fimAmerica, Invaded starringNick Searcy was distributed widely in the swing states and credited with assisting in voting turnout.[6] In an interview withPete Hegseth, onFox News, Gujral claimed she was a registeredDemocrat who believed in strong borders.[7]
In 2008, Gujral was treated for early stage, invasivebreast cancer. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy.[8] She hostsThrive! With Namrata, a panel based show with cancer survivors on theThrive Channel.[9]
In 2013, she was treated forBurkitt's lymphoma. She was treated with aggressive chemotherapy includingintrathecalchemotherapy atCity of Hope for six months. The cause oflymphoma was prior chemotherapy from 2008 forbreast cancer. In 2013, Gujral was in remission from both cancers.[2]
Gujral made her singing debut with the single "Dancin' In The Clouds", an Americancountry rock meetsBollywood style duet, with country singerSteve Azar. The video appeared onCMT,MTV andVH1. Hollywood composerJay Ferguson produced the single, reportedly making her the first American artist with Eastern roots to be featured on CMT.[10]
Lifetime TV honored Gujral as one of their “Remarkable Women” making her the first Indian-American to join the ranks of other notables such asMichelle Obama andHillary Clinton.[citation needed] The honor was awarded for her production1 a Minute.[citation needed]
For her role as Saira Ahmed on the CBS seriesFamily Law, Gujral, along with co-starsTony Danza andKathleen Quinlan, wereColumbia TriStar's official nomination for the 2002Emmy Awards.[citation needed]
