NGC 979 is alenticular galaxy[3][4][5] located within the constellation of Eridanus.[1] This galaxy has a possible outer ring which is dim but smooth. This structure might be a polar ring.[3] The featurelessness of this galaxy means that it is completely devoid ofHII regions and consequently, star formation.[6]
