NGC 5144 is anunbarred spiralgalaxy located in the constellation ofUrsa Minor. It has avelocity of 3,202 ± 9 km/s corresponding to aHubble Distance of 47.2 ± 3.3megaparsecs (154 million light-years).[2] It was discovered byWilliam Herschel in May 1791.[3]

The luminosity class of NGC 5144 is classified as III with a broad HI line.[4] It is a possiblefield galaxy which isn't belonging to a group or any cluster, making it gravitationally isolated.[5]

NGC 5144 is also astarburst galaxy[6] and classified as aMarkarian galaxy (designated as MRK 256), since its core emits out excessive amounts ofultraviolet light.[7][8]
