NGC 497 is abarred spiral galaxy approximately336 millionlight-years away from Earth in theconstellation ofCetus.[1] It was discovered by French astronomerÉdouard Stephan on November 6, 1882.[3]
NGC 497 was imaged byHalton Arp and included in hisAtlas of Peculiar Galaxies asArp 8, under the category of 'split arm' galaxies.[4]
