NGC 4523 is aMagellanic spiral galaxy located about 35 to 50 millionlight-years away[3] in theconstellationComa Berenices.[4] It was discovered by astronomerHeinrich d'Arrest on April 19, 1865.[5] NGC 4523 is a member of theVirgo Cluster.[6][7] A distance of (13 ± 2Mpc) for NGC 4523 was derived from usingyellow supergiants in the galaxy asstandard candles.[6]
On December 23, 1999, aType II supernova designated asSN 1999gq was detected in NGC 4523.[8][9]
