NGC 254 is alenticular galaxy located in theconstellationSculptor. It was discovered byJohn Herschel in 1834.[4] It is in agalaxy group withNGC 134.[3]
NGC 254 is an example of aring galaxy, a galaxy with a ring,[3] and in this case, no central bar. Across the entire galaxy disk, there is a disk of ionized gas rotating in the direction opposite the stellar disk's rotation.[3] This situation may have arose when a retrograde-orbitingsatellite galaxy accreted onto the galaxy itself, some 1 billion years ago.[3]
