TheMussau monarch (Symposiachrus menckei), also known as thewhite-breasted monarch, is a species ofbird in the familyMonarchidae. It isendemic to theBismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. Its naturalhabitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowlandforests and rural gardens. It is threatened byhabitat loss.
The Mussau monarch was originally placed in the genusMonarcha until moved toSymposiachrus in 2009.[2] Alternate names includeMencke's monarch,Mussau Island monarch,Mussau pied monarch andSt. Matthias monarch. The species name is afterBruno Mencke who supported the expedition on which the species was collected by Oskar Heinroth.
