Murshidabad University is a public state university inBerhampore, Murshidabad, West Bengal. The university was established in 2021 by the West Bengal government underThe Murshidabad University Act, 2018.[1][2][3] It is named after a great thinker, and the first Nawab of BengalMurshid Quli Khan.

History

The institution was established in 1853 asKrishnath College as aliberal arts and sciences college inBaharampur. In 1998, Krishnath College became an affiliate of theUniversity of Kalyani.[4] Prior to this, they were an affiliate toUniversity of Calcutta.[5] In July 2018, the Murshidabad University Bill, which was passed by the house will enable a state-aided university inMurshidabad to be established by upgrading the existing Krishnath College.[6][7] In February 2021, the principal of this college is appointed as vice-chancellor of Murshidabad University by Department of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal.[8]

The college was established in 1853 byMaharani Swarnamoyee Devi.[9] The college was named for her husband, Maharaja Krishnath Roy ofCossimbazar. In 1841, Maharaja Krishnath received his zamindary (a jurisdiction assigned to azamindar) and had the dream of establishing an academic institution. Following her husband's death, Swarnamoyee gave as a gift both land and money, saving the college from financial crisis.[10] Mr. Harrison became the first principal of the college.[11] The famous Indian Scholar and writerBrajendra Nath Seal developed the infrastructure of the college.

Accreditation

In 2016 Krishnath College was awarded an 'A' grade by theNational Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).[13] The college is recognized by theUniversity Grants Commission (India) (UGC).[14] It is built on the structure ofOxford University.[15]
