TheMunicipality of Brda (pronounced[ˈbəɾda];Slovene:Občina Brda,Italian:Comune di Collio) is amunicipality in westernSlovenia. It is located in theSlovenian Littoral region, extending from theItalian border to theSoča River. It is bounded bySabotin Hill (609 meters or 1,998 feet) to the east and Korada Hill (812 meters or 2,664 feet) to the north.[2]

The people speak adistinctive Slovene dialect belonging to theLittoral dialect group.

Geography

The municipality comprises the Slovenian part of theGorizia Hills (Slovene:Goriška brda,Italian:Collio Goriziano), which are one of the most importantwine-producingmicroregions in Slovenia. It enjoys a mildMediterranean climate and it is protected from the strongBora wind, which frequently blows in other parts of the Slovenian Littoral.

Economy

Agriculture is an important part of the local economy: besides grapes,cherries are the most important agricultural product in the municipality, followed byapricots,pears,figs, andplums. Together with theVipava Valley, Brda produces most of thepersimmons in Slovenia. Small amounts ofolive oil are also produced.

The wine varieties grown in Brda includeMerlot,Cabernet Sauvignon,Pinot noir,Pinot gris, andSauvignon vert.

Notable people

Brda is the native land of the poetAlojz Gradnik, who was born in the village ofMedana.
