The municipality comprises the Slovenian part of theGorizia Hills (Slovene:Goriška brda,Italian:Collio Goriziano), which are one of the most importantwine-producingmicroregions in Slovenia. It enjoys a mildMediterranean climate and it is protected from the strongBora wind, which frequently blows in other parts of the Slovenian Littoral.
Agriculture is an important part of the local economy: besides grapes,cherries are the most important agricultural product in the municipality, followed byapricots,pears,figs, andplums. Together with theVipava Valley, Brda produces most of thepersimmons in Slovenia. Small amounts ofolive oil are also produced.
