Honduras is administratively divided into 18departments, which are subdivided into 298municipalities (Spanish:municipios). Municipalities are the only administrative division in Honduras that possesslocal government. Each municipality has its own electedmayor as opposed to the appointed governors of departments. For statistical purposes, the municipalities are further subdivided into 3731aldeas, and those into 27969caserios.[1] At the lowest level, somecaserios are subdivided into 3336barrios orcolonias.
