Erith was a local government district in north westKent from 1876 to 1965 around the town ofErith.[1] It also included the generally suburban areas ofNorthumberland Heath,Belvedere, and parts ofBarnehurst,Bexleyheath,Crayford and the SE2 London Postal District ofAbbey Wood.
The district was formed when theLocal Government Act 1858 was adopted by the parish of Erith, and a Local Board was formed to govern the town. Under theLocal Government Act 1894 it became anurban district.[1] It moved to purpose-built offices atErith Town Hall on 2 June 1932.[2]
The district ran its owntram services asErith Urban District Council Tramways until they became the responsibility of theLondon Passenger Transport Board in 1933.[3] In 1938 it gained the status ofmunicipal borough.[4]
In 1965 it was abolished by theLondon Government Act 1963 and its former area transferred toGreater London from the administrative county ofKent. Its former area was combined with that of other districts to form the present-dayLondon Borough of Bexley.[5]
