Munchhausen is a commune located in theBas-Rhin department in theGrand Est region of northeastern France. Situated at the confluence of theSauer andRhine rivers, it lies within thePetit Ried, a natural region characterized by its floodplainmeadows andwetlands. The commune encompasses an area of 5.92 square kilometers, with elevations ranging from 106 to 142 meters above sea level. It is bordered to the east by the Rhine River, which serves as a natural boundary withGermany, and to the west by the foothills of theNorthern Vosges. Thevillage is divided into two distinct parts: theupper village, built on a promontory overlooking the old bed of the Rhine, and thelower village, situated on the former riverbed and protected by high-water dikes.Munchhausen is part of the intercommunality of thePlaine du Rhin and is approximately 55 kilometers north ofStrasbourg.[6][7]
