TheMun River (Thai:แม่น้ำมูล,RTGS: Maenam Mun,pronounced[mɛ̂ː.náːmmūːn];Northeastern Thai:แม่น้ำมูล,pronounced[mɛ̄ː.nâːmmûːn]), sometimes spelledMoon River, is atributary of theMekong River. It carries approximately 26 cubic kilometres (6.2 cu mi) of water per year.
The river begins in theKhao Yai National Park area of theSankamphaeng Range, nearNakhon Ratchasima in northeastThailand. It flows east through theKhorat Plateau in southernIsan (Nakhon Ratchasima,Buriram,Surin, andSisaket Provinces) for 750 kilometres (466 mi), until it joins the Mekong atKhong Chiam inUbon Ratchathani. The Mun River's main tributary is theChi River, which joins it in theKanthararom District ofSisaket Province.
Thanks to theAndy Williams hit song, the Mun River was called "Moon River" byUS Air Force personnel stationed atUbon Ratchathani airbase during theVietnam War. The spelling is still fairly common.[1]
The controversialPak Mun Dam, which is charged with causing environmental damage,[2] is near the river's confluence with theMekong.
