Muhammad Naimuddin (Bengali:মোহাম্মদ নইমুদ্দীন; 1832–1907[1]/1916[2]) was aBengali Islamic scholar, writer, and journalist. He was the chief editor of theAkhbare Islamia.[3]
Muhammad Naimuddin was born in 1832 to aBengali Muslim family in the village of Shuruj inTangail,Mymensingh District,Bengal Presidency.[1]
He completed his initial education at theDulai Madrasa inSujanagar,Pabna District, and also completedIslamic studies inDhaka. He later traveled throughMurshidabad,Bihar,Allahabad,Agra,Delhi, and other places to gain further religious knowledge. He was awarded the title of 'Alem-ud-Dahar' for his specialization in Islamic knowledge.[1]
Naimuddin had numerous careers in his life. He was a school teacher as well as aqazi (marriage registrar) whilst inPabna.[citation needed]
He finally started concentrating on publishing magazines, writing books and spreading the message of Islam under the patronage of thePanni zamindars of Karatia.[citation needed]
The family employed Naimuddin as the editor of theAkhbare Islamia journal.[3] Aside from that, he began working on translating the entireQuran intoBengali language.[2][4]
Naimuddin had written around 30 books relating to religion. The first volume of his translation of theQuran was published on 26 September 1891.[5] From 1892 to 1908, he published the translation of 9paras. In 1892, he also released a four-volume Bengali translation of theFatwa-e-Alamgir with the assistance ofWajed Ali Khan Panni and patronage of Hafez Mahmud Ali Khan Panni.[6][7] He was made the chief editor of the Bengali monthlyAkhbare Islamia in 1883, published from the Mahmudia Press.[6] These works were sponsored by theZamindar of Karatia Hafez Mahmud Ali Khan Panni.[6] Some of his other notable books include:
There is difference of opinion as to what year Naimuddin died.Wakil Ahmed ofBanglapedia claims it was on 23 November 1907 in his home village, while others say 1916.[citation needed]
