Mu Piscium (μ Piscium) is a solitary,[8] orange-huedstar in thezodiacconstellation ofPisces. It is visible to the naked eye with anapparent visual magnitude of 4.84.[2] Based upon an annualparallax shift of 10.73 mas as seen from Earth,[1] it is located about 304 light years from theSun. Given this distance, it has a relatively highproper motion, advancing 296 mas per year across the sky.[9]

This is anevolvedK-typegiant star with astellar classification of K4 III.[2] It has an estimated 1.25[2] times themass of the Sun and, at the age of 5.6 billion years, has expanded to about 37[4] times theSun's radius. From this enlargedphotosphere, it is radiating 186[2] times theSun's luminosity at aneffective temperature of 4,126 K.[2] It has a magnitude 12.02visual companion at anangular separation of 209.30 arc seconds along aposition angle of 298°, as of 2012.[10]

Naming

[edit]

InChinese,外屏 (Wài Píng), meaningOuter Fence, refers to an asterism consisting of μ Piscium,δ Piscium,ε Piscium,ζ Piscium,ν Piscium,ξ Piscium andα Piscium. Consequently, theChinese name for μ Piscium itself is外屏四 (Wài Píng sì, English:the Fourth Star of Outer Fence.)[11]
