Mozhan Marno (née Navabi, born May 3, 1980) is an American film and television actress. She is known for her roles inThe Blacklist andHouse of Cards and played Soraya Manutchehri inThe Stoning of Soraya M..[1] She was previously known asMozhan Marnò, but returned to hergiven last name, Navabi, in 2023.

Early life and education

Marno was born in Los Angeles. Her parents are fromIran and met inCalifornia.[2] She was educated atPhillips Academy inAndover, Massachusetts.[3][4] She received her BA in French and German comparative literature fromBarnard College ofColumbia University and her MFA in Acting from theYale School of Drama.

Personal life

She currently resides inBrooklyn, New York.[5] In addition to English she speaksFrench,German,Persian, and someItalian.[3]

Career

Mozhan Marno played the title role in the 2008 filmThe Stoning of Soraya M., about a woman whose husband falsely accuses her of adultery, resulting in her death by stoning.[5][6] In addition she has had roles in a number of television series includingThe Paul Reiser Show,The Glades,Hung,The Mentalist,Bones,The Unit,Medium,K-ville, andStandoff. Marno also appeared in the UntitledJohn Wells Medical Drama Pilot, which was not aired. She also stars inAna Lily Amirpour's directorial debut,A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, produced byElijah Wood, under his company, The Woodshed.[5] In 2011, Marno voiced Mirabelle Ervine, a Breton mage and Master Wizard of the College of Winterhold, in the critically acclaimed video gameThe Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.[7] She played reporter Ayla Sayyad on seasons 2 and 3 of the acclaimedNetflix seriesHouse of Cards, for which she was nominated for a SAG award. She playedMossad agent and assassin Samar Navabi in seasons 2-6 ofThe Blacklist.[8][9]

Marno also directs and writes screenplays. Her first feature-length screenplay,When the Lights Went Out, was a quarter finalist for theNicholl Fellowship. She adaptedWhen the Lights Went Out as a play and it was mounted atNew York Stage and Film in July 2013 starringLaura Innes, and directed byKate Whoriskey (Ruined).[5][10] Navabi’s short film,Incoming, which she wrote and directed, was accepted to theNoor Iranian Film Festival, LA SHORTS FEST, the Asians on Film Festival, and theDC Asian Pacific American Film Festival.

In February 2024, Marno was cast in theNetflix limited seriesZero Day to portray a recurring role of Melissa Kornblau.[11]
