Moussa Niakhaté (born 8 March 1996) is a professionalfootballer who plays as acentre-back forLigue 1 clubLyon. Born in France, he plays for theSenegal national team.
In July 2018, Niakhaté joined1. FSV Mainz 05 fromFC Metz for an undisclosed fee, signing a five-year contract until 2023.[3] On 6 July 2022, Niakhaté signed a three-year deal withPremier League sideNottingham Forest.[4] On 4 July 2024, Niakhaté signed forLigue 1 clubLyon.[5]
Born in France, Niakhaté isSenegalese by descent. He is a former youth international for France.[6] He debuted with the seniorSenegal national team in a 5–12023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification win overMozambique on 24 March 2023.[7]
In December 2023, Niakhaté was named in Senegal's squad for the postponed2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in theIvory Coast.[8] In their round of 16 match againstthe hosts, he missed a penalty in theshoot-out which Senegal lost 5–4 following a 1–1 draw after extra time.[9]
