Monte Ceneri is amountain pass in thecanton of Ticino inSwitzerland. It connects theMagadino Plain and theVedeggio Valley across theLugano Prealps at an elevation of 554 metres (1,818 ft) above sea level. It provides the most direct route between the cities ofBellinzona andLugano.[1] Despite its name (monte is the Italian word for "mountain"), Monte Ceneri is the lowest point on the crest betweenMonte Tamaro and theCamoghè.[2]

Two tunnels have been dug under Monte Ceneri, theMonte Ceneri Road Tunnel for theA2 motorway and theMonte Ceneri Rail Tunnel for theGotthard railway. A new rail tunnel, theCeneri Base Tunnel, was opened in 2020,[3] and connectsCamorino near Bellinzona andVezia near Lugano.[1][4]

The larger part of Ticino, which lies to the north of Monte Ceneri and includes the valley of theTicino river and the cities of Bellinzona andLocarno, is often referred to as theSopraceneri (above the Ceneri). The smaller part to the south, which includesLugano,Mendrisio andChiasso, takes the nameSottoceneri (under the Ceneri).
