Monica Joan Tranel is an Americanrower and lawyer. She competed at the1996 and2000 Summer Olympics. Tranel ran in the2022 and2024 U.S. House of Representatives elections in Montana.[1]
Tranel was born and raised in Powder River Country, attending grade school inMiles City,Ashland and Broadview.[2] She graduated fromBillings Central Catholic High School, where she competed in basketball and track.[3]
Tranel earned aBachelor of Arts fromGonzaga University and herJuris Doctor fromRutgers University–Camden.[4]
Tranel finished fourth in thewomen's eight at the1996 Summer Olympics.[5][6][7][8] She also competed in the2000 Summer Olympics, where she finished 12th in women's singlesscull races.[9]
TheUniversity of Montana named one of their 40-foot (12 m) four-seat competition boats "The Tranel" in her honor.[10]
Tranel was the 2022 Democratic candidate forMontana's 1st congressional district, running againstRyan Zinke and John Lamb.[11][12][13][14][15] During the lead-up to the2022 United States House of Representatives elections in Montana, American vloggerHank Green interviewed Tranel inMissoula andBozeman.[16] Tranel lost to Zinke in the general election, receiving 46.5% of the vote to Zinke's 49.6%.[17]
Tranel was the 2024 Democratic candidate forMontana's 1st congressional district, running againstRyan Zinke in a reprise of the 2022 election. She lost with 44.6% of the vote to Representative Zinke's 52.3%.[18]
Tranel has nine siblings and three daughters.[19][20]
