TheMolluginaceae are afamily offlowering plants recognized by several taxonomists. It was previously included in the larger familyAizoaceae. TheAPG III system of 2009 made no change in the status of the family as compared to theAPG II system of 2003 and theAPG system of 1998, apart from a reassignment of several genera, such as the placement ofCorrigiola andTelephium intoCaryophyllaceae,Corbichonia inLophiocarpaceae,Microtea intoMicroteaceae andLimeum inLimeaceae, because the family was found to be widely polyphyletic in Caryophyllales. In additionMacarthuria was found not to be related toLimeum as previously thought and thus it was placed inMacarthuriaceae, and similarly species formerly placed inHypertelis, apart fromtype speciesHypertelis spergulacea, a true Molluginaceae, were found to belong elsewhere and were described asKewa in the familyKewaceae, named for theRoyal Botanic Gardens Kew.[2] Molluginaceae is still assigned to the orderCaryophyllales in the cladecore eudicots, although the generic circumscription is difficult becauseMollugo is not monophyletic.
Molluginaceae in its current circumscription includes ca 9 genera and ca 80 known species[3]
Tropicos currently includes 12 genera.[4]
