Mohd Shahar bin Abdullah (Jawi: محمد شاهر بن عبدﷲ; born 6 December 1980[1]) is aMalaysianpolitician who has served as theMember of Parliament (MP) forPaya Besar since May 2018 and Chairman of the Government Backbenchers Club since March 2024. He served as theDeputy Minister of Finance I in theBarisan Nasional (BN) administration under former prime ministerIsmail Sabri Yaakob and former ministerTengku Zafrul Aziz from August 2021 to the collapse of the BN administration in November 2022 and theDeputy Minister of Finance II in thePerikatan Nasional (PN) administration under former prime ministerMuhyiddin Yassin and former Minister Tengku Zafrul from March 2020 to the collapse of BN administration in August 2021. He is a member and the Division Chief of Paya Besar of theUnited Malays National Organisation (UMNO), a component party of the BN coalition.[2]

Political career

Shahar contested seat in Paya Besar in2018 Malaysian general election, defeating candidates fromPakatan Harapan (PH) andMalaysian Islamic Party (PAS).[3]

Shahar was also appointed the Youth Information Chief of UMNO after being elected in 2018.

On 9 March 2020, he was appointedDeputy Minister of Finance II toMuhyiddin cabinet of thePN administration. He also held the position withAbdul Rahim Bakri.[4]

In 2018, he contested for theUMNO Youth Chief position but lost toAsyraf Wajdi Dusuki. In July 2018, he was appointed as UMNO Youth Communication Chief by Asyraf Wajdi. He contested and lost again during the 2023 election.
