Mohammed Shabir (Arabic:محمد شبير; 28 March 1946 – 12 November 2023) was a Palestinian politician and academic who served as president of theIslamic University of Gaza from 1990 to 2005. He was the Prime Minister-in-waiting for theNational Unity Government 2007.[1] SeniorHamas officials announced that Hamas andFatah had agreed on him on 13 November 2006.[2] Shabir, however, did not become prime minister.Salam Fayyad becamePrime Minister whenHamas took over Gaza, in 2007.[3] Considered close to both Hamas and Fatah, Shabir frequently visited the lateYasser Arafat in hisWest Bank andGaza Strip headquarters.[4]
Shabir was originally fromKhan Yunis and received hisdoctorate inmicrobiology fromMarshall University. He had six children. His wife served as deputy minister of women's affairs.
Shabir was killed by an Israeli sniper after initially surviving an airstrike during theGaza war on 12 November 2023. He was 77.[5] The airstrike on his family's home killed five people, including a baby. Shabir was killed with his wife Rehab Mohamad Shubair, their daughter-in-law Najat Ayoub Alhelo, and their grandson, Muhammad Malik Shubair.[6]
