Mohammed Yahya Suleiman Dwedar (Arabic:محمد يحيى سليمان دويدار;[1] born 9 January 2001) is a Palestinianmiddle-distance runner specialized in the800 metres race. He competed at the2024 Paris Olympics.
Dwedar was born and raised inJericho, in the West Bank.[1] He started running in 2012, following his sister, who was already practicing the sport.[2] In September 2016, he travelled toSassari andPloaghe inSardinia, Italy, as part of a project to help Palestinian youth with their sports training, held in collaboration between various associations, the Italian municipalities, the municipality of Jericho and theUniversity of Sassari, and taking place across Sassari, Ploaghe,Alghero,Cagliari andRome.[2][3][4]
As of April 2023,[update] Dwedar was studying at the Faculty of Arts ofAl-Quds University.[1]
Dwedar competed forPalestine at the2021 Summer World University Games inChengdu, China, and the2021 Islamic Solidarity Games inKonya, Turkey. He became national champion in 2022.[5]
He made his professional debut at the2023 Arab Athletics Championships inMarrakech, Morocco, finishing 11th in his specialty.[5] He went on to take part in the2023 Arab Games inOran, Algeria, the2023 Asian Athletics Championships inBangkok, Thailand, and the2023 World Athletics Championships inBudapest, Hungary, as well as in the2023 Asian Games inHangzhou, China. He finished 9th in the 800 metres at the 2024West Asian Athletics Championships inBasra, Iraq, establishing a personal best of 1:52.43, and one of 4:01.46 in the1500 metres.[5]
Despitefailing to pass the qualifications proper, Dwedar was invited to representPalestine at the2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, again in the800 metres.[5] The athlete lamented the difficulties posed bymovement restrictions in the occupied West Bank, claiming that travelling from one city to another for a competition was made impossible byIsraeli raids amid theGaza war.[6] He travelled to Algeria for a two-month training camp ahead of the Olympics.[5]
