From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Character in the Aeneid
Not to be confused withMenesthius orMenestheus.

Mnestheus (Ancient Greek:Μνησθεύς) is a character fromRoman mythology, found inVirgil'sAeneid. He is described by Virgil as the ancestral hero of theMemmii and "Of the house ofAssaracus". One of a handful of vaguely defined lieutenants underAeneas, he appears to be Aeneas's most senior captain, taking charge in Book 9 in his absence. He takes second place in the boat race during the funeral games ofAnchises in Book 5.
