Mizukami (水上村,Mizukami-mura) is avillage located inKuma District,Kumamoto Prefecture,Japan. As of 31 August 2024[update], the village had an estimatedpopulation of 1,946 in 839 households, and apopulation density of 10 persons per km2.[1] The total area of the village is 190.96 km2 (73.73 sq mi).
Mizukami is located at the easternmost tip of theKyushu Mountains and Hitoyoshi Basin, in southeast Kumamoto. The entire area is mountainous and forested.

Mizukami has ahumid subtropical climate (KöppenCfa) characterized by warm summers and cool winters with light to no snowfall.

The area of Mizukami was part of ancientHigo Province, During theEdo Period it was part of the holdings ofHitoyoshi Domain. After theMeiji restoration, the villages of Yuyama, Iwano and Edai were established with the creation of the modern municipalities system on April 1, 1889. These three villages merged to form the village of Mizukami on November 1, 1895.
Mizukami has amayor-council form of government with a directly elected mayor and aunicameral village council of eight members. Mizukami, collectively with the other municipalities of Kuma District, contributes two members to the Kumamoto Prefectural Assembly. In terms of national politics, the village is part of theKumamoto 4th district of thelower house of theDiet of Japan.
The local economy is based on agriculture and forestry.
Mizukami has one combined public elementary/junior high school operated by the village government. The village does not have a high school.
Mizukami has no passenger railway services. The nearest train stations isYunomae Station on theKumagawa RailwayYunomae Line in neighboring Yunomae.
