TheMississippi River Alluvial Plain is analluvial plain created by theMississippi River on which lie parts of sevenU.S. states, from southern Louisiana to southern Illinois (Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana).[1]
The plain is divided into (a) theMississippi River Delta in the southern half ofLouisiana and (b) the upperMississippi Embayment running from central Louisiana to Illinois.[2]
The term "Mississippi embayment" is sometimes used more narrowly to refer to its section on the western side of the river, running through easternArkansas, southeastern Missouri, westernmostTennessee (east side of the River), westernmostKentucky (east side of the River) and southernmostIllinois, and excluding northwestMississippi where the alluvial plain is known as theMississippi Delta. Most of the alluvium in the lower Mississippi valley is thought to be sourced from the west.[3]
It is the largestecoregion ofLouisiana, covering 12,350 square miles (32,000 km2), and including all of the historic Mississippi Riverfloodplain in the state.
