Miss Vietnam is the biggest beauty pageant and the first nationwide beauty contest after thereunification of Vietnam. Before that, there was also aSouth VietnameseSaigon-based beauty contest namedCuộc thi tìm kiếm người đẹp tại Sài Gòn (lit.'Beauty Contest in Saigon'). In 1955,Công Thị Nghĩa became the first titleholder of the contest as well as the first national beauty pageant titleholder in Vietnamese history.[2] In 1965, the title was held with the coronation ofThái Kim Hương.[3]
The after-unification contest Miss Vietnam was initiated and organized byTiền Phong– a daily newspaper published by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the youth wing of theCommunist Party of Vietnam. Initially the contest was called "Miss NationalTiền Phong Newspaper", starting from 1988 and is held every two years, the contest was officially renamed as "Miss Vietnam" in 2002. The first person to hold the title isBùi Bích Phương.[4] The pageant was created with the purpose of finding women with good morals, knowledge and representing the image of Vietnamese women.[5]
During the period from1988 to2000, beauty queens did not participate in international beauty contests.[6] In2002, they were sent to participate inMiss World.[7] However, from2008 to2014, due to many issues surrounding the beauty queens, they could not attendMiss World.[8]
The beauty pageant has been broadcast onVietnam Television (VTV) since 1998. From 1998–2008 and 2012–present, the contest was broadcast live onVTV1,VTV2,VTV3 andVTV9. In 2010, the contest was broadcast byVietnam Digital Television (VTC).[11] Since 2018, the contest has also been broadcast live on theYouTube channel of Miss Vietnam and the co-organizing company Sen Vàng.
^Due to some bad reputation before, Ky Duyen was not allowed to attend Miss World 2014, instead Nguyen Thi Loan was chosen.
^Because Miss Vietnam 2012 Dang Thu Thao refused to participate in the Miss World 2012 and Miss World 2014 contests instead of Miss Ky Duyen. Therefore, Miss World 2012 was attended by the first runner-up of Miss Vietnam 2010, Hoang My, instead.
^Miss Ngoc Han twice refused to participate in Miss World 2010 and 2011 for personal reasons.
^According to the rules of the Miss Vietnam contest, participants must have a high school diploma, but Miss Thuy Dung did not have one, so she seriously violated the rules and was stripped of her right to participate in Miss World.
^Miss Vietnam 2018, 2nd Runner-Up Thuy An refused to participate in Miss International 2018 and was replaced by Thuy Tien, who had the highest score in the top 5. Thuy An then participated in Miss Intercontinental.
