Miranda de Pencier (born August 20, 1968, inToronto, Ontario) is a Canadian film and television director, producer, and actress. She is most noted for her 2011 filmThroat Song, which won theCanadian Screen Award forBest Live Action Short Drama at the1st Canadian Screen Awards.[1]
She began her career as an actress, most notably playing Josie Pye in the 1985 telemovieAnne of Green Gables and its sequels.[2] She also had a recurring role onStreet Legal in the 1989–90 season as Jennifer Winston, a college student who was dating Chuck Tchobanian,[3] and appeared in the filmThe Myth of the Male Orgasm and on stage in Canadian productions ofLes Misérables andAspects of Love.[4]
In the late 1990s she began producing, first in theatre[5] before moving into film production. Through her production company, Northwood Entertainment,[6] she first produced the 2005 filmCake.[7] Her subsequent credits as a producer have included the filmsPu-239,Adam andBeginners,[8] the television seriesWild Roses[9] and the new 2017 Anne of Green Gables adaptationAnne with an E.[10]
The short filmThroat Song was her debut as a director.[11] Her feature debut,The Grizzlies, debuted at the2018 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018. In October, de Pencier won theDirectors Guild of Canada award for Best Direction in a Feature Film forThe Grizzlies.[12]
She is the daughter of magazine publisherMichael de Pencier, and the sister of documentary filmmakerNicholas de Pencier.[13]
