TheMinistry of Housing and Local Government was aUnited Kingdom government department formed following theSecond World War, covering the areas ofhousing andlocal government.
It was formed, as theMinistry of Local Government and Planning, in January 1951 when functions of theMinistry of Health, which had taken over the powers of the oldLocal Government Board, were merged with theMinistry of Town and Country Planning, which had been created in 1943. Its name was changed to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government by the newConservative government following theOctober 1951 general election.[1][2]
It was merged in 1970 with theMinistry of Transport and theMinistry of Public Building and Works to form theDepartment for the Environment.
The ministry was headed by theMinister of Housing and Local Government.
The name was partially revived by theMay ministry on 9 January 2018, when theDepartment for Communities and Local Government was renamed as theMinistry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, with a similar name change applying to its Secretary of State.[3]
